About Jet2

Jet2.com (LS) is the UK's largest package-holiday airline, based at Leeds Bradford and flying from eleven UK airports to leisure destinations across the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands and the Alps. It operates a fleet of Boeing 737 and Airbus A321neo aircraft and carries around 17 million passengers a year.

Jet2 Flight Delay Compensation

If your Jet2 flight arrived at its final destination 3 or more hours late and the cause was within the airline's control, you are entitled to compensation under EU261 (or UK261 for flights from the UK). The amount depends on the distance of the journey:

€250
Up to 1,500 km (£220)
€400
1,500 – 3,500 km (£350)
€600
Over 3,500 km (£520)

Jet2 Flight Cancellation Compensation

If Jet2 cancelled your flight less than 14 days before departure and cannot prove extraordinary circumstances, the same amounts apply — whether or not you took the replacement flight. You are additionally entitled to a refund or re-routing, and to meals and a hotel while you wait.

Jet2 Claims Are UK261 Claims

Jet2 is a British airline, so all of its flights fall under UK261: flights departing the UK because of the departure airport, and flights back to the UK from Europe because Jet2 is a UK carrier. Compensation is paid in pounds: £220 for flights up to 1,500 km, £350 between 1,500 and 3,500 km, £520 above that. Almost every Jet2 route — Manchester–Alicante, Leeds–Tenerife, Stansted–Faro — sits in the £220 or £350 tier.

Package holidays and the return flight

If you booked a Jet2holidays package, your UK261 compensation for the flight is separate from any package-travel rights (Package Travel Regulations 2018). A cancelled outbound flight can therefore give you both the flight compensation and, from the tour operator, a refund or replacement holiday. We claim the UK261 part; keep your ATOL certificate for the rest.

What we see with Jet2

  • Jet2 pays clear-cut cases (crew, technical, late inbound aircraft) reasonably quickly, usually within 4–8 weeks of a written claim.
  • Disputes concentrate on Canary Islands and Greek-island weather and on ATC restrictions over France during summer strikes — which are extraordinary, but only when the airline proves the link to your flight.
  • Jet2 is a member of the AviationADR scheme, so unresolved UK disputes can go to ADR before court.

How to Claim From Jet2 Yourself

  1. Collect the facts: booking reference, flight number, date, scheduled and actual arrival time (door-open), and every message Jet2 sent about the disruption.
  2. Submit a written claim through Jet2's "Flight delay and cancellation compensation" form (jet2.com → Help → Compensation claims). Quote "Regulation (EC) 261/2004" (or UK261 for UK departures), the article — Art. 5 for cancellations, Art. 6/7 for delays, Art. 4 for denied boarding — and the amount per passenger. Ask for payment by bank transfer and state that you decline vouchers.
  3. Wait 4–8 weeks for the reply. If it cites extraordinary circumstances, reply once asking for the operational evidence (reason code, ATC regulation reference, weather report).
  4. Escalate to the enforcement body or ADR scheme named below if the airline refuses or goes quiet — or hand the case to us at any point; the 35% fee is the same whether we start on day one or after your own rejection.

Escalation routes: AviationADR (Jet2 is a member); the CAA's PACT; the English county court (six years) or Scottish sheriff court simple procedure (five years).

Jet2's Strengths and Weak Points

Jet2 has one of the better punctuality records among UK leisure airlines and a customer-service culture that pays undisputed claims fairly quickly. The disputes cluster around two things: summer ATC and weather in southern Europe, where Jet2 leans on the extraordinary-circumstances defence for anything involving French airspace or Greek-island winds, and early-morning rotation delays from its northern bases, which are within its control. Because most Jet2 passengers are on packages, the airline sometimes routes claims to Jet2holidays customer service; flight compensation is nevertheless the airline's liability and should be claimed on the airline form.

Example Jet2 Cases

  • Manchester–Palma delayed 3 h 30 min by a crew change after an earlier delay: £350 per passenger, accepted on first claim.
  • Leeds–Alicante cancelled the evening before "due to adverse weather": METAR data showed clear conditions at both airports; the cause was an aircraft shortage. £350 per passenger after AviationADR.
  • Newcastle–Rhodes diverted and arrived 6 hours late because of a genuine airport closure (wildfire smoke): extraordinary — £0 compensation; meals and hotel refunded.

Jet2 and Early Departures

Since the Court of Justice's Azurair ruling (2021), a flight brought forward by more than one hour is treated as a cancellation. Jet2 occasionally retimes early-morning departures to an earlier slot at short notice; if the new departure is more than an hour earlier and you were told less than 14 days in advance, compensation is due even if you made the flight, unless the retiming was within the −1 h / +2 h window and notified 7–14 days out.
