KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL) is the flag carrier of the Netherlands and the oldest airline in the world still operating under its original name. From its single hub at Amsterdam Schiphol it flies to around 160 destinations worldwide; KLM Cityhopper operates the regional network on Embraer aircraft.
KLM Flight Delay Compensation
If your KLM flight arrived at its final destination 3 or more hours late and the cause was within the airline's control, you are entitled to compensation under EU261 (or UK261 for flights from the UK). The amount depends on the distance of the journey:
KLM Flight Cancellation Compensation
If KLM cancelled your flight less than 14 days before departure and cannot prove extraordinary circumstances, the same amounts apply — whether or not you took the replacement flight. You are additionally entitled to a refund or re-routing, and to meals and a hotel while you wait.
Act Fast: The Dutch Two-Year Limit
KLM's contract points to Dutch law, where the limitation period for EU261 claims is only two years from the flight date — one of the shortest in Europe. Because KLM is a Dutch airline, it can be sued in the Netherlands for any of its flights, but if your flight departed from a country with a longer limit (six years in the UK or Ireland), we file there instead.
Schiphol connections
KLM is a hub-and-spoke airline: most European passengers connect at Schiphol to long-haul destinations. A missed connection caused by a late feeder flight is assessed on the arrival delay at the final destination, so an Edinburgh–Amsterdam–Nairobi itinerary that arrives a day late is a €600 claim. Schiphol's capacity and security-queue problems of 2022–2023 are a recurring "extraordinary circumstances" argument; queues that made you miss a flight are not the airline's fault, but a cancelled flight because KLM did not have crew on the right side of the airport is.
Practical notes
- KLM handles claims through its online compensation form and usually replies within 2–6 weeks; it settles clear cases and contests connections.
- Flights sold as KLM but operated by Delta from the US are not covered; flights operated by KLM from the US to Amsterdam are.
- The Dutch enforcement body is the ILT (Inspectie Leefomgeving en Transport); Dutch courts are passenger-friendly on technical-fault cases (van der Lans was a KLM case).

How to Claim From KLM Yourself
- Collect the facts: booking reference, flight number, date, scheduled and actual arrival time (door-open), and every message KLM sent about the disruption.
- Submit a written claim through the "Request compensation" form on klm.com (Help → Compensation and refunds → EU261). Quote "Regulation (EC) 261/2004" (or UK261 for UK departures), the article — Art. 5 for cancellations, Art. 6/7 for delays, Art. 4 for denied boarding — and the amount per passenger. Ask for payment by bank transfer and state that you decline vouchers.
- Wait 2–6 weeks for the reply. If it cites extraordinary circumstances, reply once asking for the operational evidence (reason code, ATC regulation reference, weather report).
- Escalate to the enforcement body or ADR scheme named below if the airline refuses or goes quiet — or hand the case to us at any point; the 35% fee is the same whether we start on day one or after your own rejection.
Escalation routes: the Dutch Inspectie Leefomgeving en Transport (ILT) as enforcement body; the Dutch sub-district court (kantonrechter), passenger-friendly but with the two-year limitation; alternatively the courts of the departure country for flights from the UK, Ireland or other EU states with longer limits.
Working With KLM
KLM pays clear technical and crew cases quickly and communicates well, but it defends connection cases vigorously and relies heavily on Schiphol-related arguments: the 2022–2023 passenger caps, security-queue failures and the airport's slot regime. Those are genuine third-party events only when they actually caused the specific delay; a KLM flight cancelled because the airline could not position crew across the airport is not excused by the airport's problems. Because of the short Dutch limitation period, older KLM claims are usually filed at the departure airport's jurisdiction instead.
Example KLM Cases
- Amsterdam–JFK delayed 3 h 20 min by a hydraulic fault: €600 per passenger, accepted.
- Bristol–Amsterdam–Nairobi, feeder delayed 55 minutes by a crew shortage, arrival 12 hours late: £520 per passenger (UK departure), paid after a county-court filing in England.
- Amsterdam–Barcelona cancelled during the Schiphol capacity cap of July 2022: KLM proved the airport-imposed cancellation quota — €0, re-routing costs refunded.
Claiming for Flying Blue Award Tickets
Tickets bought with Flying Blue miles are covered by EU261: the regulation excludes only tickets that were free and not available to the public, and award tickets are available to any member. The compensation is the full fixed amount — €250, €400 or €600 — not a refund of miles. KLM sometimes replies that "award tickets are not eligible"; that reply is wrong and is reversed when challenged.

Two years under Dutch law. If your flight departed from the UK or Ireland we can use their six-year limits instead.
Yes — KLM is an EU airline, so its flights into the EU are covered even when they depart from outside Europe.
If the connection was on one booking and you arrived at your final destination 3+ hours late for a reason within KLM's control, yes, and the amount is based on the whole journey.
No. The Court of Justice decided in a KLM case (van der Lans) that technical problems are inherent in operating an airline.
€250, €400 or €600 depending on the distance to your final destination; long-haul via Amsterdam is usually €600.
In the Netherlands, yes (two years). If the flight departed from the UK, Ireland, France or Spain, the claim can still be brought there under a longer limitation period.
Airport-imposed capacity limits and security failures can be, but KLM must show they caused your specific delay. Crew positioning or aircraft rotation problems are KLM's own.
Yes. KLM Cityhopper is an EU airline and the operating carrier; claims go through the same KLM form.
