Check My Lufthansa Flight →About Lufthansa
Lufthansa (LH) is Germany's flag carrier and Europe's largest airline group, headquartered in Frankfurt and Munich, Germany. With a fleet of over 700 aircraft (including subsidiaries), Lufthansa serves over 220 destinations worldwide.
Lufthansa Flight Delay Compensation
If your Lufthansa flight arrived at its final destination 3 or more hours late, you're entitled to compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004. The amount depends on the flight distance:
Lufthansa Flight Cancellation Compensation
If Lufthansa cancelled your flight less than 14 days before departure and the cancellation was within the airline's control, you're entitled to the same compensation amounts above. This applies even if Lufthansa rebooked you on another flight — as long as you arrived at your destination significantly later than planned.
Common Issues with Lufthansa
Lufthansa and its subsidiaries (Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings, Brussels Airlines) have experienced significant disruptions due to staff strikes, IT failures, and operational issues. Strike-related cancellations by Lufthansa's own staff (pilots, cabin crew) are generally compensable.
Our Experience with Lufthansa Claims
Claims against Lufthansa can take longer due to the airline's large legal department. However, German consumer courts are very passenger-friendly, and our network of German lawyers has extensive experience with Lufthansa claims.

Lufthansa Claims: Hubs, Strikes and Connections
Lufthansa is Germany's flag carrier and the core of the Lufthansa Group, which also includes SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and Discover Airlines. Lufthansa itself operates a hub-and-spoke network from Frankfurt and Munich, so a large share of its passengers are connecting — and that is where most Lufthansa claims come from.
Missed connections on one booking
If a delayed Lufthansa feeder flight (say Lyon–Frankfurt) makes you miss the onward long-haul leg on the same booking, compensation is calculated on the whole journey — Lyon to your final destination — not just on the short first leg (CJEU case C-11/11 Folkerts). A two-hour delay into Frankfurt that turns into an overnight stay in Frankfurt and a next-day arrival in Chicago is a €600 claim, plus hotel and meal expenses.
Strikes are usually not "extraordinary"
Lufthansa has faced repeated strikes by its own cabin crew, pilots and ground staff, including several rounds in 2024. Under the Court of Justice's rulings in Krüsemann (C-195/17) and Airhelp v SAS (C-28/20), a strike by the airline's own employees is part of the normal exercise of its business and does not release the airline from paying compensation. Strikes by third parties — air traffic controllers, airport security — are treated differently and are generally extraordinary.
Practical notes
- Lufthansa handles EU261 claims through its online feedback form and usually replies within 2–6 weeks; it is one of the more responsive European carriers, but it does contest connections and "weather at the hub" cases.
- Codeshare flights sold as LH but operated by United, Air Canada or another non-EU carrier from a non-EU airport are not covered by EU261 — the operating carrier and departure airport decide.
- German courts apply a three-year limitation period counted from the end of the year in which the flight took place. A flight disrupted in March 2024 can still be claimed until 31 December 2027.
Lufthansa Routes and Typical Claim Values
| Route | Distance | Per passenger |
|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt – Munich | ≈ 300 km | €250 |
| Frankfurt – Madrid | ≈ 1,420 km | €250 |
| Munich – Athens | ≈ 1,500 km | €400 |
| Frankfurt – New York JFK | ≈ 6,200 km | €600 |
| Manchester – Frankfurt – Singapore (one booking) | ≈ 10,900 km | £520 (UK departure) |
How to Claim From Lufthansa Yourself
- Collect the facts: booking reference, flight number, date, scheduled and actual arrival time (door-open), and every message Lufthansa sent about the disruption.
- Submit a written claim through Lufthansa's online feedback form (Help & Contact → Feedback → "Compensation according to EU Regulation 261/2004"). Quote "Regulation (EC) 261/2004" (or UK261 for UK departures), the article — Art. 5 for cancellations, Art. 6/7 for delays, Art. 4 for denied boarding — and the amount per passenger. Ask for payment by bank transfer and state that you decline vouchers.
- Wait 2–6 weeks for the reply. If it cites extraordinary circumstances, reply once asking for the operational evidence (reason code, ATC regulation reference, weather report).
- Escalate to the enforcement body or ADR scheme named below if the airline refuses or goes quiet — or hand the case to us at any point; the 35% fee is the same whether we start on day one or after your own rejection.
Escalation routes: the söp arbitration board (Schlichtungsstelle für den öffentlichen Personenverkehr) — Lufthansa is a member and decisions are free for passengers; the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) as enforcement body; German courts with a three-year limitation period counted from year-end.
Lufthansa Group: Which Airline Pays
A Lufthansa booking may be operated by Lufthansa, Lufthansa CityLine, Eurowings, Air Dolomiti, Austrian, SWISS, Brussels Airlines or Discover Airlines — all Lufthansa Group, all covered by EU261, but each a separate legal entity. The operating carrier shown on the boarding pass is the one liable; the group's central customer-relations team handles claims for most of them, which in practice makes the distinction less important than for other groups.
Example Lufthansa Cases
- Frankfurt–Boston delayed 3 h 25 min after a technical inspection: €600 per passenger, accepted on first claim.
- Munich–Lisbon cancelled on a ver.di ground-staff strike day: ver.di members employed by Lufthansa are the airline's own staff — €250 per passenger, paid after söp arbitration.
- Edinburgh–Frankfurt–Delhi, feeder 45 minutes late, next Delhi flight the following day: £520 per passenger (UK departure, whole-journey distance) plus hotel refund.
Frankfurt and Munich: Connection Times and Claim Risk
Lufthansa sells connections at Frankfurt with a minimum connecting time of 45 minutes and at Munich of 35 minutes — among the tightest in Europe. This makes the network efficient and makes missed connections common when a feeder is even modestly late. For passengers this is good news: because the delay is measured at the final destination, a 30-minute feeder delay that costs a long-haul connection converts into a €600 claim, and Lufthansa's own operational data — which records the feeder's delay code — usually settles whether the cause was within its control. Lufthansa handles these claims through the same form; state both flight numbers and the original and actual arrival times at the final destination.
