About British Airways

British Airways (BA) is the UK's flag carrier and one of the world's largest airlines, headquartered in London Heathrow, UK. With a fleet of over 250 aircraft, British Airways serves over 200 destinations worldwide.

British Airways Flight Delay Compensation

If your British Airways flight arrived at its final destination 3 or more hours late, you're entitled to compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004. The amount depends on the flight distance:

€250
Up to 1,500 km
€400
1,500 – 3,500 km
€600
Over 3,500 km

British Airways Flight Cancellation Compensation

If British Airways cancelled your flight less than 14 days before departure and the cancellation was within the airline's control, you're entitled to the same compensation amounts above. This applies even if British Airways rebooked you on another flight — as long as you arrived at your destination significantly later than planned.

Common Issues with British Airways

As a major international carrier, British Airways operates both short-haul and long-haul flights. IT system failures, staff strikes, and operational disruptions have led to significant cancellations in recent years. Long-haul cancellations can result in the maximum €600 compensation.

Our Experience with British Airways Claims

British Airways handles a large volume of claims and can be slow to respond. For long-haul flights (over 3,500 km), each passenger can claim €600 — making it especially worthwhile to pursue your claim.

British Airways Claims: UK261, Heathrow and IT Failures

British Airways is a UK airline, so for flights departing the UK — and for BA-operated flights arriving in the UK from outside the EU — your rights come from UK261, the post-Brexit copy of EU Regulation 261/2004. Flights departing an EU airport (Madrid–London, for example) are covered by the EU version. The eligibility rules are identical; compensation is paid in pounds:

Flight distanceUK261EU261
Up to 1,500 km£220€250
1,500 – 3,500 km£350€400
Over 3,500 km£520€600

Because BA runs one of Europe's largest long-haul networks from London Heathrow (Terminals 3 and 5) and Gatwick, a large proportion of BA claims fall into the top tier — £520 per passenger for a delayed or cancelled flight to New York, Dubai or Singapore.

Typical BA disruption causes

  • IT and systems failures — BA has suffered several major outages (May 2017, and repeated check-in and app failures since). The Court of Justice and UK courts treat a failure of the airline's own systems as within its control.
  • Heathrow capacity and slot restrictions — genuine ATC or airport-imposed restrictions can be extraordinary, but BA must prove the restriction applied to your specific flight.
  • Crew and aircraft rotation problems — operational, and compensable.

BA accepts claims through its "EU/UK compensation" web form and typically replies in 4–8 weeks. Unresolved UK disputes can go to CEDR, the ADR scheme BA belongs to, or to the county court, where the limitation period is six years in England and Wales. Flights sold by BA but operated by American Airlines, Iberia or Aer Lingus are governed by the operating carrier's status, not BA's.

British Airways Routes and Typical Claim Values

How to Claim From British Airways Yourself

  1. Collect the facts: booking reference, flight number, date, scheduled and actual arrival time (door-open), and every message British Airways sent about the disruption.
  2. Submit a written claim through BA's "EU/UK compensation" web form under Help & contacts → Delays and cancellations. Quote "Regulation (EC) 261/2004" (or UK261 for UK departures), the article — Art. 5 for cancellations, Art. 6/7 for delays, Art. 4 for denied boarding — and the amount per passenger. Ask for payment by bank transfer and state that you decline vouchers.
  3. Wait 4–8 weeks for the reply. If it cites extraordinary circumstances, reply once asking for the operational evidence (reason code, ATC regulation reference, weather report).
  4. Escalate to the enforcement body or ADR scheme named below if the airline refuses or goes quiet — or hand the case to us at any point; the 35% fee is the same whether we start on day one or after your own rejection.

Escalation routes: CEDR (BA is a member — free, binding on BA); the CAA's PACT team; the English county court via Money Claim Online, with a six-year limitation period.

What to Expect From BA

British Airways has a dedicated compensation team and accepts liability for the most common causes — technical faults, crew problems, aircraft swaps — more readily than many carriers, but its volume of Heathrow operations means a large number of "ATC/airport" defences. BA also operates a long-haul network on which a single cancellation affects 250–300 passengers, so it sometimes offers vouchers ("e-vouchers") worth slightly more than the statutory amount; accepting one settles the cash claim, so read the terms. Codeshare confusion is common: a ticket with a BA flight number operated by American Airlines from the US is not covered, while an AA-coded flight operated by BA from London is.

Example British Airways Cases

  • Heathrow–JFK cancelled by an IT outage, rebooked next day: £520 per passenger plus hotel, accepted after BA initially cited "circumstances beyond our control".
  • Gatwick–Málaga delayed 3 h 15 min by a late inbound aircraft: £220 per passenger, paid after CEDR.
  • Heathrow–Athens cancelled on the day of a Heathrow-wide runway closure after a storm: extraordinary — £0 compensation; meal and hotel costs refunded.

Heathrow-Specific Issues

Heathrow operates at close to full capacity, so weather or ATC restrictions produce cancellations rather than delays: BA thins its schedule for the day, choosing which short-haul flights to cut. Passengers on the cancelled flights are compensated unless BA can prove the specific restriction required the specific cancellation — and BA's choice of which flights to cancel is itself a decision within its control, an argument that has succeeded in county courts. Terminal 5 baggage-system failures and BA's own IT outages are squarely within the airline's control; aircraft "on stand" waiting for a gate after an early arrival is not a delay at all, because arrival is measured at door-open.
