Vueling (VY) is Spain's largest low-cost airline and part of International Airlines Group. Based at Barcelona El Prat, with major operations at Paris Orly and across Spain and Italy, it operates an all-Airbus A320-family fleet on more than 200 routes within Europe and to North Africa.
Vueling Flight Delay Compensation
If your Vueling flight arrived at its final destination 3 or more hours late and the cause was within the airline's control, you are entitled to compensation under EU261 (or UK261 for flights from the UK). The amount depends on the distance of the journey:
Vueling Flight Cancellation Compensation
If Vueling cancelled your flight less than 14 days before departure and cannot prove extraordinary circumstances, the same amounts apply — whether or not you took the replacement flight. You are additionally entitled to a refund or re-routing, and to meals and a hotel while you wait.
Claiming Against Vueling in Spain
Vueling is a Spanish airline, so every flight it operates is covered by EU261. Its contract points to Spanish law, where the limitation period for these claims is five years. Spain's aviation authority, AESA, runs a free complaint procedure whose decisions are binding on the airline for claims under €5,000 — we use it as a fast escalation route before court.
Why Vueling claims are common
- Vueling has repeatedly ranked among the European airlines with the most passenger complaints, and its Barcelona and Paris Orly operations are prone to rotation delays in summer — a late inbound aircraft is not an extraordinary circumstance.
- French and Spanish ATC strikes are extraordinary; Vueling's own cabin-crew strikes are not.
- Vueling frequently rebooks cancelled passengers on the next day's flight. You are entitled to earlier re-routing on another carrier, and to a hotel and meals in the meantime — keep receipts.
Amounts
Most Vueling routes are under 1,500 km (€250) or between 1,500 and 3,500 km (€400) — Barcelona–London Gatwick is €250, Barcelona–Tel Aviv €400. Flights from the UK to Spain on Vueling are covered by UK261 and paid in pounds.

How to Claim From Vueling Yourself
- Collect the facts: booking reference, flight number, date, scheduled and actual arrival time (door-open), and every message Vueling sent about the disruption.
- Submit a written claim through Vueling's online claim form (Customer Service → Claims → Flight incidents), with your booking code. Quote "Regulation (EC) 261/2004" (or UK261 for UK departures), the article — Art. 5 for cancellations, Art. 6/7 for delays, Art. 4 for denied boarding — and the amount per passenger. Ask for payment by bank transfer and state that you decline vouchers.
- Wait 6–10 weeks for the reply. If it cites extraordinary circumstances, reply once asking for the operational evidence (reason code, ATC regulation reference, weather report).
- Escalate to the enforcement body or ADR scheme named below if the airline refuses or goes quiet — or hand the case to us at any point; the 35% fee is the same whether we start on day one or after your own rejection.
Escalation routes: AESA, Spain's aviation safety agency, whose complaint procedure is free and produces decisions binding on the airline for claims under €5,000 — a highly effective route against Vueling; Spanish courts (five years); for UK departures, the CAA and the English county court.
The AESA Route in Practice
Since 2023 AESA's decisions on EU261 complaints have been binding on airlines for amounts up to €5,000, which changed the dynamics of Vueling claims: a passenger whose claim was rejected can file with AESA online, free of charge, and receive a binding decision within a few months, without a lawyer. Vueling now settles a large share of well-documented claims before AESA rules. We use the AESA procedure as the standard escalation for Spanish departures and Vueling flights generally.
Example Vueling Cases
- Barcelona–Paris Orly delayed 3 h 50 min by a late inbound aircraft: €250 per passenger, paid after an AESA complaint.
- Gatwick–Barcelona cancelled the same morning "for operational reasons", family rebooked the next day: £220 per passenger plus £260 hotel and meals.
- Rome–Barcelona delayed 4 hours during a French ATC strike affecting the route: extraordinary — €0; meal costs refunded.
