About EasyJet

EasyJet (U2) is one of Europe's leading low-cost airlines, headquartered in London Luton, UK. With a fleet of over 300 Airbus aircraft, EasyJet serves over 150 airports across Europe.

EasyJet Flight Delay Compensation

If your EasyJet flight arrived at its final destination 3 or more hours late, you're entitled to compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004. The amount depends on the flight distance:

€250
Up to 1,500 km
€400
1,500 – 3,500 km
€600
Over 3,500 km

EasyJet Flight Cancellation Compensation

If EasyJet cancelled your flight less than 14 days before departure and the cancellation was within the airline's control, you're entitled to the same compensation amounts above. This applies even if EasyJet rebooked you on another flight — as long as you arrived at your destination significantly later than planned.

Common Issues with EasyJet

EasyJet operates high-frequency routes across Europe, meaning delays are common. Technical issues, crew shortages, and tight turnaround times contribute to frequent disruptions. While EasyJet is generally more cooperative than some competitors, they still reject many valid claims.

Our Experience with EasyJet Claims

EasyJet typically responds within 4-8 weeks. If they reject your claim citing extraordinary circumstances, our team will review the actual flight data and challenge any invalid rejections.

easyJet Claims: EU261 and UK261 Side by Side

easyJet is a British airline (Luton headquarters) with a large Austrian subsidiary, easyJet Europe, and bases across the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal and Germany. That matters for your claim: flights departing the UK, or arriving in the UK on an easyJet UK aircraft, fall under UK261 (the retained version of the regulation), while flights from EU airports fall under EU261. The rules are the same; only the currency differs.

Flight distanceEU261 (EU departures)UK261 (UK departures)
Up to 1,500 km€250£220
1,500 – 3,500 km€400£350
Over 3,500 km€600£520

Almost all easyJet routes are short- and medium-haul, so most easyJet claims are for €250/£220 or €400/£350 per passenger. A family of four on a cancelled Gatwick–Málaga flight, for example, is owed £1,400.

How easyJet handles claims

easyJet accepts compensation claims through the "Delays and cancellations" section of its website and typically answers within 4–6 weeks. In our experience easyJet pays clear-cut cases (technical faults, crew rostering, late inbound aircraft) more readily than some competitors, but disputes arise around weather at London Gatwick — its largest base — and around cancellations announced 14 days or more in advance, which carry no compensation but still entitle you to a refund or re-routing.

For UK-departure flights, unresolved disputes can be escalated to the ADR scheme easyJet subscribes to; for EU departures, to the national enforcement body of the departure country. The time limit is six years for claims brought in England and Wales, five in Scotland, and between one and six years across the EU depending on the country of the court.

easyJet Routes and Typical Claim Values

How to Claim From easyJet Yourself

  1. Collect the facts: booking reference, flight number, date, scheduled and actual arrival time (door-open), and every message easyJet sent about the disruption.
  2. Submit a written claim through easyJet's "Delays and cancellations" claim form on its website (Help → Claim EU261 compensation). Quote "Regulation (EC) 261/2004" (or UK261 for UK departures), the article — Art. 5 for cancellations, Art. 6/7 for delays, Art. 4 for denied boarding — and the amount per passenger. Ask for payment by bank transfer and state that you decline vouchers.
  3. Wait 4–6 weeks for the reply. If it cites extraordinary circumstances, reply once asking for the operational evidence (reason code, ATC regulation reference, weather report).
  4. Escalate to the enforcement body or ADR scheme named below if the airline refuses or goes quiet — or hand the case to us at any point; the 35% fee is the same whether we start on day one or after your own rejection.

Escalation routes: AviationADR for UK departures (easyJet is a member); the enforcement body of the departure country for EU departures; the English county court (six years) or the courts of the departure country.

What Makes easyJet Different

easyJet publishes a fairly clear compensation policy and pays undisputed cases without much fuss, which makes it one of the easier airlines to claim from. The friction comes from three recurring situations: Gatwick weather and ATC, where easyJet operates so many rotations that a morning fog bank can disrupt the whole day and the airline argues everything downstream is extraordinary; cancellations announced by email that never reached the passenger, which easyJet treats as 14-day notice; and the "easyJet Plus" and package (easyJet holidays) bookings, where passengers are sometimes sent from one department to the other. In all three, the operational record and the message timestamps decide the case.

Example easyJet Cases

  • Gatwick–Faro delayed 5 h 10 min after a morning ATC restriction: the restriction lasted 40 minutes; the rest was a crew swap. £220 per passenger paid after AviationADR.
  • Berlin–Manchester cancelled the night before, rebooked two days later: €250 per passenger plus €210 hotel and meals, accepted on first claim.
  • Amsterdam–Gatwick cancelled during the Schiphol capacity cuts of summer 2022: easyJet proved the airport-imposed capacity restriction — €0, but re-routing costs on another carrier refunded.

easyJet's Automatic Compensation and Why to Check It

easyJet sometimes pays compensation proactively after major disruptions, transferring the fixed amount to passengers who claim through its app within days. When it does, check the amount against the distance band and the number of passengers on the booking — automated payments occasionally apply the short-haul rate to a medium-haul flight or pay one passenger instead of all. Any shortfall can be claimed like any other compensation.
