Eurowings (EW) is the Lufthansa Group's low-cost airline, headquartered in Düsseldorf. It flies an Airbus A320-family fleet from bases across Germany, Austria and Mallorca to around 140 short- and medium-haul destinations, and is one of the most-flown airlines by German leisure passengers.
Eurowings Flight Delay Compensation
If your Eurowings flight arrived at its final destination 3 or more hours late and the cause was within the airline's control, you are entitled to compensation under EU261 (or UK261 for flights from the UK). The amount depends on the distance of the journey:
Eurowings Flight Cancellation Compensation
If Eurowings cancelled your flight less than 14 days before departure and cannot prove extraordinary circumstances, the same amounts apply — whether or not you took the replacement flight. You are additionally entitled to a refund or re-routing, and to meals and a hotel while you wait.
Eurowings Claims Under German Law
Eurowings is a German airline, so its contract points to German courts. Germany's limitation period is three years counted from the end of the year in which the flight took place: a flight disrupted in May 2024 can be claimed until 31 December 2027. Germany also has a dedicated ADR body for air-passenger disputes, the söp (Schlichtungsstelle für den öffentlichen Personenverkehr), which Eurowings is bound to — a free escalation route before court.
What Eurowings passengers claim for
- Germany's frequent airline and airport strikes: strikes by Eurowings' own crew or by Lufthansa Group ground staff are not extraordinary; Verdi strikes by airport security staff (a third party) usually are.
- Rotation delays across the German bases — a late aircraft from Düsseldorf cancelling the evening Hamburg flight is within the airline's control.
- Flights operated by Eurowings Europe (Austria/Malta) under EW codes: the claim goes against the operating company; we check the operator.
Amounts
Nearly all Eurowings routes are inside Europe: €250 up to 1,500 km (Düsseldorf–London, Hamburg–Vienna) and €400 above (Cologne–Palma, Berlin–Tenerife is €400 as an intra-EU flight over 1,500 km). Flights from the UK on Eurowings fall under UK261 and are paid in pounds.

How to Claim From Eurowings Yourself
- Collect the facts: booking reference, flight number, date, scheduled and actual arrival time (door-open), and every message Eurowings sent about the disruption.
- Submit a written claim through the Eurowings compensation form (eurowings.com → Help & contact → Compensation for delays or cancellations). Quote "Regulation (EC) 261/2004" (or UK261 for UK departures), the article — Art. 5 for cancellations, Art. 6/7 for delays, Art. 4 for denied boarding — and the amount per passenger. Ask for payment by bank transfer and state that you decline vouchers.
- Wait 4–8 weeks for the reply. If it cites extraordinary circumstances, reply once asking for the operational evidence (reason code, ATC regulation reference, weather report).
- Escalate to the enforcement body or ADR scheme named below if the airline refuses or goes quiet — or hand the case to us at any point; the 35% fee is the same whether we start on day one or after your own rejection.
Escalation routes: söp arbitration (Eurowings is a member, free for passengers); the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt; German courts, three years from year-end. Austrian departures on Eurowings Europe can use the apf arbitration body.
Working With Eurowings
Eurowings runs a dense point-to-point network from German bases with tight aircraft rotations, so knock-on delays are its most common disruption — and its most common defence. The TAP ruling (C-74/19) settles this: an earlier delay only excuses the later one if the original cause was itself extraordinary. Eurowings' second recurring defence is German airport strikes; ver.di strikes by airport security staff are third-party and extraordinary, while strikes by Eurowings' or Lufthansa Group's own staff are not. The söp route works well: Eurowings generally follows söp recommendations.
Example Eurowings Cases
- Düsseldorf–Palma cancelled in the evening after a morning technical fault on the same aircraft: €250 per passenger, accepted.
- Hamburg–Lisbon delayed 3 h 45 min "due to the late arrival of the aircraft": the aircraft's morning delay was a crew rostering problem — €400 per passenger after söp.
- Cologne–Vienna cancelled on a ver.di airport-security strike day: third-party strike — €0 compensation; re-routing costs on Austrian refunded.
