Check My Ryanair Flight →About Ryanair
Ryanair (FR) is Europe's largest low-cost carrier, headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. With a fleet of over 500 Boeing 737 aircraft, Ryanair serves over 230 destinations across Europe and North Africa.
Ryanair Flight Delay Compensation
If your Ryanair flight arrived at its final destination 3 or more hours late, you're entitled to compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004. The amount depends on the flight distance:
Ryanair Flight Cancellation Compensation
If Ryanair cancelled your flight less than 14 days before departure and the cancellation was within the airline's control, you're entitled to the same compensation amounts above. This applies even if Ryanair rebooked you on another flight — as long as you arrived at your destination significantly later than planned.
Common Issues with Ryanair
Ryanair is one of the most complained-about airlines in Europe for delays and cancellations. The airline operates a massive number of daily flights, which means disruptions are frequent. Ryanair has historically been reluctant to pay compensation, often citing extraordinary circumstances even when the disruption was within their control.
Our Experience with Ryanair Claims
Ryanair frequently rejects compensation claims on the first attempt. Don't be discouraged — our legal team has extensive experience handling Ryanair claims and knows exactly how to challenge their rejections.

Claiming Against Ryanair: What Makes It Different
Ryanair's booking terms ask passengers to submit an EU261 claim directly to the airline first, through the "EU261 compensation" form in the Ryanair Help Centre, before a third party can act on their behalf. Ryanair usually replies within 4–8 weeks. If the reply is a rejection, a partial offer, or silence, that is the point at which we take over — with your written claim and Ryanair's reply as the foundation of the case.
Ryanair flies point-to-point from more than 90 bases, so a cancelled flight rarely comes with a same-day alternative on the same route. Under Article 8 of EU261 you can still choose between a full refund and re-routing at the earliest opportunity — including on another carrier — and Ryanair must cover reasonable meals and hotel costs while you wait (Article 9). Keep those receipts: they are refundable on top of the fixed compensation.
Rejection reasons we see most often from Ryanair
- "Air traffic control restrictions" — genuine ATC slot delays can be extraordinary, but Ryanair must show that the restriction actually affected your flight, not the network in general. We request the flight's operational log and Eurocontrol data.
- "Knock-on effect from an earlier disruption" — a late-arriving inbound aircraft is normally within the airline's control (CJEU case C-74/19 TAP confirms the airline must have planned reserve capacity).
- "Crew shortage / crew out of hours" — staffing is an operational matter, not an extraordinary circumstance.
- "Claim submitted by a third party" — solved by the direct-claim step described above.
Because Ryanair is an Irish airline, its contracts point to Irish courts, where the limitation period for EU261 claims is six years. Flights operated by Ryanair UK, Buzz, Malta Air or Lauda Europe under FR flight numbers are still covered — the operating carrier is what counts.
Ryanair Routes and Typical Claim Values
Ryanair's network is almost entirely short- and medium-haul, so the arithmetic is simple: flights of up to 1,500 km pay €250 per passenger, everything longer within Europe pays €400, and only a handful of routes to the Canary Islands, Israel, Jordan or Morocco from northern Europe cross into the €400 band because of distance rather than the €600 one. Because Ryanair rarely rebooks passengers on other carriers, cancellation cases also tend to include hotel and meal expenses of €100–€300 per passenger, recoverable on top of the fixed sum.
| Route | Distance | Per passenger | Family of 4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dublin – London Stansted | ≈ 460 km | €250 | €1,000 |
| Manchester – Alicante | ≈ 1,780 km | £350 (UK261) | £1,400 |
| Berlin – Palma | ≈ 1,560 km | €400 | €1,600 |
| Milan Bergamo – Tel Aviv | ≈ 2,800 km | €400 | €1,600 |
| Kraków – Edinburgh | ≈ 1,650 km | €400 | €1,600 |
How to Claim From Ryanair Yourself
- Collect the facts: booking reference, flight number, date, scheduled and actual arrival time (door-open), and every message Ryanair sent about the disruption.
- Submit a written claim through the "EU261 compensation" form in the Ryanair Help Centre (login with your booking reference). Quote "Regulation (EC) 261/2004" (or UK261 for UK departures), the article — Art. 5 for cancellations, Art. 6/7 for delays, Art. 4 for denied boarding — and the amount per passenger. Ask for payment by bank transfer and state that you decline vouchers.
- Wait 4–8 weeks for the reply. If it cites extraordinary circumstances, reply once asking for the operational evidence (reason code, ATC regulation reference, weather report).
- Escalate to the enforcement body or ADR scheme named below if the airline refuses or goes quiet — or hand the case to us at any point; the 35% fee is the same whether we start on day one or after your own rejection.
Escalation routes: the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) for flights departing Ireland; AviationADR for UK departures; the enforcement body of the departure country elsewhere. Ryanair's contract of carriage points to Irish courts, where the Small Claims procedure costs €25 and the limitation period is six years.
Example Ryanair Cases
- Stansted–Dublin cancelled at 22:00 "for operational reasons", rebooked next morning: a late inbound aircraft from Faro was the cause. €250 per passenger plus €120 hotel refund, paid after AviationADR referral.
- Bergamo–Palermo delayed 3 h 20 min, "ATC restrictions": Eurocontrol data showed a 25-minute slot delay; the remaining time was a crew change. €250 per passenger, settled before the Irish court hearing.
- Dublin–Faro cancelled 16 days before departure: no compensation (14-day rule); refund obtained within seven days after Ryanair initially offered only a voucher.
Ryanair's Direct-Claim Rule in Detail
Ryanair's terms state that it will not deal with third-party claims unless the passenger has first submitted the claim directly and either received a reply or waited 28 days. Irish and UK courts have generally allowed Ryanair to insist on this step, so we build it into the process: you submit the online form (we tell you exactly what to write), Ryanair replies or 28 days pass, and we take over with the claim reference. It adds a month at most and, because Ryanair's first reply is usually a template, it rarely changes the outcome.
